The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The former head of state was found guilty of planning a military coup in September and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.
This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.
His son, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the chance of Bolsonaro's move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.
The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 8 miles from his dwelling.
Global Responses
Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist US President Donald Trump, causing him to impose a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will have a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
Bolsonaro was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.
The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on January 8th, many his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.
The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the time, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
