British Broadcasting Corporation Gaza Documentary Deemed a 'Major' Infringement of Media Rules, States Broadcasting Watchdog

The British broadcaster engaged in a "major breach" of industry standards by omitting to mention that the presenter of a documentary about Gaza was the offspring of a Hamas representative, as determined by British broadcasting authority Ofcom.

An investigation by the media regulator into Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone has found that the documentary was "substantially inaccurate".

The head of the BBC had earlier expressed regret, stating there had been "a serious error in relation to accuracy".

The regulator has directed the BBC to broadcast a prime-time statement about its decisions.

"As this represents a major infringement of our regulations, we are instructing the broadcaster to transmit a message of our determinations against it on BBC Two at nine o'clock in the evening, with a date to be confirmed," the regulator stated.

'Potential to Undermine Confidence'

The watchdog's statement declared: "Our probe determined that the film's omission to reveal that the presenter's male guardian held a position in the Hamas-run administration was significantly deceptive.

"This implied that the audience did not have essential details which may have been extremely pertinent to their assessment of the voice and the details he shared.

"Trust is at the heart of the connection between a media organization and its audience, notably for a national broadcasting corporation such as the British Broadcasting Corporation.

"This oversight had the risk to undermine the significantly high amounts of confidence that audiences would have invested in a documentary produced by the BBC about the Israel-Gaza war."

The documentary was withdrawn from the online platform in last February after the narrator's family links were revealed, and in this past July an internal BBC review found it infringed the organization's content policies on accuracy.

A corporation official commented: "The regulator's decision is in accordance with the results of the corporation's inquiry, that there was a major oversight in the film in relation to the BBC's Editorial Guidelines on accuracy, which reflects regulation 2.2 of the regulator's media standards.

"We have apologised for this and we comply with Ofcom's decision in complete. We will follow the penalty as soon as the schedule and wording are determined."
