The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
