The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Continued Decline
Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
