Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to question particular calls made by the chair umpire, following the protocol already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
